Daymon

When I hear the knock my heart slows to a steady pace. It’s my learned reaction to potential threats. I recognize the type of knocking. It’s the way a cop knocks on a door.

I put my dick back in my pants, guide Nova into the trailer's bathroom, and get ready to confront whoever is outside.

I peer out the side window and see a state trooper’s car parked directly behind the trailer.

I put on my best, “I’m innocent” smile and open the trailer door.

A short, squat trooper is standing at the bottom of the steps, looking up at me through dark sunglasses beneath a hat that looks a little too small for his fat head. I hate that he’s pulling me away from Nova. Super Nova. I still have the scent of her in my nostrils.

“Is there anything I can help you with?” I ask politely, hoping he fucks off quick.

“We got some reports from the park ranger that you are squatting in a campsite,” the state trooper looks grumpy, but harmless. If it comes to it, I’m sure I can drop him before he pulls his gun. He looks slow.

“Sorry, I came in late last night. I didn’t have a flashlight, so I couldn’t see where to pay,” which is the honest truth, beyond hiding some guns, money, and a girl in the back of the trailer.

The office looks over my body, stares at my tattoos, and then gets into a subtle, but threatening, defensive posture.

“Those are prison tats,” he says, his left hand getting closer and closer to his gun. “Did you just get out?”

“I got out a while ago. When I was much younger,” I say as calmly as possible. I don’t want a fight, and neither does the trooper. I can tell.

“I’m gonna need to see your license and registration,” he says with his posture softening a bit.

Nova’s reaction to my past will be better. She’s edgy. She’s punk. She gets it. The world ain’t sunshine and roses.

“Okay.” Immediately my mind wanders to the guns and money hidden in the trailer. Also, the young runaway hiding beneath a blanket. If only she has the good sense to stay out of sight.

My license and registration are in the glove compartment, but the state trooper follows me to the passenger side door, and I can’t remember if I have anything incriminating in there.

I open it with my body tense and ready for a fight, but it’s just CD’s, my paperwork, and a copy of the bible that I keep meaning to read.

“Here you go,” I hand the trooper my ID and papers for the truck. The truck is clean, I’m just not sure what will come up when he runs my ID through the system. It’s up to date, but I wonder how he will react to being in the presence of someone who did a decade for armed bank robbery...and managed to hide the ill gotten gains from the law.

The sun is starting to crest the tops of the trees, and I’m squinting as I watch the trooper shuffle back to his vehicle.
